Spanish Language
I always felt that the Spanish was an important language to learned in the United States. There are many people in America who do not feel the same way. These people may know only a couple words in Spanish and feel that it is okay for them to state the words anyway they want or for them to make fun of the language. They feel it is okay for Americans to do this to the Spanish language, but when Spanish speaking people mispronounce an English word they feel the Latino people are mocking the English language. It is not fair for any person to to mock another person's language. No group of people deserve to have their language be considered a way to humor others.

Hey,
I saw your post after writing man, wow we think alike. Good post, if I might add.
I agree with your thoughts regarding Spanish in the United States. Being multilingual in the United States is crucial because so many people in this country are multilingual. Being multilingual should be a source of pride and a sign of intellectual and personal strength in my opinion.
The readings regarding language, however, illustrated the ways in which ideas relating to English dominance and the use of Spanish are reinforced through American Culture and media. for example in films. This reinforces people's negative views of speaking multiple language and Spanish.
I agree with this post. It seems to me as if there is a double standard. Spanish speakers are expected to speak perfect English but English speakers are not expected to even attempt to speak spanish.
I agree for the most part. I don’t feel like people should be obligated to learn Spanish, because if they are, then why not learn Arabic or Wolof or Chinese, seeing as though in some cities these ethnicities hold the majority. No one can force people to learn another language just because other people in the country speak it. But what I do agree with is that no one should be made fun of or ridiculed for the fact that they can’t speak English. People in the United States should be tolerant and proud of the diversity present, not trying to do away with it.
I agree with your comments that there is a double standard when it comes to language. I feel like many people throw around the few Spanish words they know and do not give much thought to all the meaning and culture behind the language. I also agree that many times native English speakers are quick to correct anyone (not only Latinos) when a person mis pronounces a word in English. Why does this happen? Many jobs in the United States encourage their employees to be bilingual because the population in the United States is changing. It is important to understand the shift that is happening in America. Many school aged children are now bilingual and they are the future of this country.
